Welcome to Methods of Teaching Foreign Language
Jenine Nowakowski
Course Description and Purpose:
The course is a synthesis of theory and its practical application in the secondary LOTE (Languages Other Than English) or FL (Foreign Language) classroom. Students will begin by exploring, historically, the theories and developments in the field of Foreign Language acquisition. In conjunction, students will look at current shifts in education that impact the instruction of FL at the state and national levels (Common Core, APPR teacher assessment, etc.). One textbook and various articles and excerpts, specifically written for teachers of FL, will be used to guide students in their understanding of teaching language communicatively, addressing the four skill areas (reading, writing, listening and speaking), focusing on the three modes of communication (interpersonal, interpretive and presentational), differentiating lessons to best reach all learners, and developing methods and techniques to inspire and motivate learners. Emphasis will be placed upon aligning instruction to standards (state and national) and bringing lessons alive through the use of authentic cultural connections. Students will complete the course ready to design and implement lessons/units in the FL classroom that are of high quality, meet the needs of all learners and satisfy the requirements of FL learning at state and national levels.
